Phil has a first class honours degree in physics, and a doctorate in nuclear structure physics, both from St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford. He also holds a post-graduate diploma in higher education teaching, taken in service, and leading to Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) status.

Phil has worked solely in the HE sector. His early career was in what is now termed eLearning, first as a Teaching and Learning Technology Programme (TLTP) teaching software developer in physics at Cardiff, next as an eLearning advisor working with academics at Hull, and finally in a strategic Head of eLearning-equivalent role at King’s College London.

He then moved into IT senior management, first as Assistant Director of Information Services at Aberystwyth, next as Head of ICT at Plymouth. Phil has held his current role, of Director of IT at Loughborough, since October 2007.
