RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a technology that allows websites to share and distribute their latest content. RSS-enabled websites, such as this site, provide RSS feeds that list article headlines and summaries (or full article text) and link back to the articles on the website. This means you can have the latest news delivered to you in one place without having to remember to visit many different websites. It also means that you don't have to rely on email - the RSS feed will automatically update each time we update a news or event page.
You can subscribe to news feeds on this site, browse the headlines and summaries only and determine which items you want to read in more detail.
You’ll need to download and install an RSS news reader (some are free), then subscribe to some RSS news feeds.
RSS readers tend to be either standalone programmes, or plug into an existing programme. Standalone RSS readers sit in the background on your desktop and automatically update the feeds you have subscribed to.
Plug in readers will work with your existing web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. You will need to ensure that the reader you choose is compatible with your operating system. You can also use the RSS feature in Outlook.
There are many readers available to download either for free, or to buy commercially. Here are some of the most popular:
Windows
NewzCrawler
FeedDemon
Awasu
