Compendex logo

  • Five year agreement with options for 1 year licence, 3 year licence, or five year licence plus 1 or 2 year extensions.  All 3 year licences end 7 December 2011.  All 5 year licences end 7 December 2013.
  • Pro-rata charging (monthly) for sites licensed partway through year.
  • Product supplied and provided by Elsevier.

Eligible Institutions

This Agreement is available to Higher and Further Education Institutions in the UK and the Republic or Ireland, Research Councils in the UK.

Background Information

This agreement is a renewal of the successful previous 5 years agreement with Elsevier for content required and used by Higher Education throughout the UK and republic of Ireland on the Ei Village platform.

Backfile

The Engineering Index Backfile has coverage from 1969 to 1884 with the historic print records digitized and manually re-keyed for accuracy. They are fully searchable abstracted and indexed thus allowing researchers to easily access virtually every major engineering innovation of the 20th century. Combined searching of Compendex and the Ei Backfile offers the most comprehensive resource for engineering available anywhere

Backfile
The Backfile may be purchased at any time during the 5 year agreement for a one-off fee of €11,248 plus VAT. No further charges are due as long at the site maintains a current subscription to Ei Village. If a site cancels its current subscription then an annual charge of the greater of 10% of the annual fee or €2,000 will be payable to access the backfile data.

Payment Terms

On receipt of a completed Application Form, Institutions will be invoiced for the Agreement year in which the Licence is signed.

For licence periods of longer than a single year duration; in subsequent years, Institutions will be invoiced three months in advance of the anniversary date of the Agreement, on 7th September.

There is monthly prorata charging for Institutions which become licensed partway through a licence year.

All Purchase Orders must be made out to Eduserv and Eduserv's invoices must be paid within 30 calendar days of the date of the invoice.



Agreement Period

Start date: 08 December 2008 End date: 07 December 2013

Institution Commitment Period

Institutions may sign to the Agreement at any time during the agreement period and are then committed to the licence period to which they have signed.

Licence periods are single year, two years, 3 years from 8 December 2008 with a renewable options for 1 or 2 years and 5 years terminating on 7 December 2013.  



How to Order

Please complete one original signed copy of the Elsevier Order Form (PDF, 549 Kb)  .

If you are purchasing the Backfile subsequent to your EI Compendex subscrition application then you should complete one original copy of the Backfile Application Form (RTF, 79 Kb)  .

When completed the form(s) should be returned to:

along with an Institution Purchase Order for the full amount due plus VAT, made out to "Eduserv".

Upon receipt of your licence Elsevier will be informed and you will be sent a computer generated Elsevier form to complete. This will need to be faxed to Elsevier in order to obtain access. Full instructions will be given by Eduserv upon receipt of orders.

Elsevier, will on receipt of an order, issue an auto-generated licence to the licensee which must be completed and returned prior to access being granted.

Who can use the resource?

Authorised User
Permitted use of the Licensed Work (the Subscribed Product) includes teaching, research, personal educational development, administration and management of the business of the Licensee's (the Subscribing Site's) organisation, and development work associated with any of the above.

The Licensed Work may be accessed and used by any Authorised User (a faculty member or employee or student of the Licensee) for the purposes of the normal business of the Licensee at any of the Licensee's premises (onsite), or remotely

Other Permitted Users:
The Licensed Work may be accessed and used by the following categories of Other Permitted Users of the Licensee for the purposes of the normal business of the Licensee's organisation at any of the Licensee's premises, or remotely, if authorised to do so (see below).These users may be granted onsite and remote access: 

  • visiting students from other educational establishments only if they are registered as an exchange student with the Licensee and only for the duration of such an exchange

What can authorised users do?

Downloading
Users may print or download, in reasonable amounts, full or partial results of searches of the Licensed Work for the purposes of the normal business of the Licensee. In addition, users shall not substantially or systematically reproduce, retain or redistribute the Licensed Work.

Modification
The Licensee agrees not to remove or in any way modify any proprietary marking including any trade mark or copyright notices on or in the Licensed Work or its carrier medium or on any Licensed Materials. The Licensee shall not create any derivative material.



Termination Clauses

Ei Compendex Current Data

Material downloaded under the Agreement before its expiry may continue to be used under the same licence conditions as pertain while the Agreement exists.

Once the Agreement has terminated then no further access to the service and to future publications will be possible unless the Agreement is renewed or extended. If the Agreement is renewed or extended then new conditions will apply. If the Agreement is not renewed then renewal is a matter between Institutions and Elsevier.

Backfile

Material may continue to be accessed and downloaded under the Agreement after its expiry and can continue to be used under the same licence conditions as pertain while the Agreement exists at no further charge provided a subscription to the current data is maintained. Failure to maintain a current subscription will result in a platform fee being charged to access the Backfile.

Personal Licences

Personal Licences are not available under this Agreement.
