Eduserv first had an agreement for LibWeb, as the product was then known, in 2001. Since then Eduserv has continued to renew the Chest Agreement as the product and supplier changed. BookData Online is now owned and supplied by Nielsen. The current Chest Agreement was obtained after consultation with the community, including a survey.
Free thirty day trials are available to sites who wish to evaluate the product before joining the Chest Agreement.
For a 30 day free trial of this service please contact Nielsen BookData on 01483 712 200 or by email to libraries.book@nielsen.com. Please copy Eduserv Help (help@eduserv.org.uk) in on any requests for a trial.

New content is added throughout the Agreement.
COUNTER Compliance
BookData Online usage statistics are currently available on request in PDF format for any given time period. These clearly show the total number of logins, maximum concurrent users reached, searches run and the number of records printed, saved, emailed, exported or downloaded in MARC format. However, the system does not currently produce formal COUNTER compliant statistics. Nielsen Book will provide an update on this situation following an internal review.
OpenURL standards
BookData Online is a stand alone bibliographic search and selection tool which accesses Nielsen’s own book information database – as such OpenURL Standards are not directly applicable. However, data can be exported from the system in many formats (for example, a simple list of ISBNs), which can then be imported into other systems.
Federated Searching
Nielsen does not support Bath Profile Z39.50 rules and procedures for communicating between two computer systems for searching and retrieving information from databases specification used.
W3C Guidelines
Nielsen follows W3C guidelines. W3C is the governing authority on Web development standards and practices. The W3C defines three accessibility levels in its Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) issue 1.0. In increasing levels of accessibility, these are: A, AA, and AAA. Nielsen BookData Online web pages are optimised for the highest standard of accessibility. All pages have been validated by an external agency and were found to be WAI-AAA compliant.
Metadata Standards
Data can be exported from BookData Online in the following standard formats – RTF, PDF, Tagged ASCII and a variety of delimited formats.
MARC Records
BookData Online can export book information as MARC records (MARC21 Unicode, MARC21 Non-Unicode or UKMARC).
Personalisation features
Each institution’s BookData Online subscription can support multiple user profiles (usage limits are on concurrent use) and each user’s profile can be personalised according to their needs. Search forms can be set and stored. The default results display format, sort order and print options can all be set. Searches can be saved for later use and new title alert emails can be sent out against those searches to the address saved in personal preferences. Lists of results can be printed, saved, exported and emailed in all the formats listed previously. The format of exported spreadsheets is also fully customisable by each user.
The annual fee remains the same (no year-on-year price increases) for sites joining the Chest Agreement for Nielsen anytime between 1 August 2009 and 31 July 2010. The annual fee will not increase over the Agreement period. Monthly prorata pricing is available for sites joining the Chest Agreement partway through a year.
Pricing is divided into categories for the number of users required (one user, up to five users, up to ten users, unlimited site licence). Pricing is then again divided based on the size of the institution. For all Higher Education institutions, size is based on JISC Banding. All Further Education and Other institutions fall into the same "FE and Others" category and therefore do not need to look at JISC Banding.
