UMF Cloud Pilot
Supported by the JISC's University Modernisation Fund (UMF), the UMF Cloud Pilot is designed specifically for universities to take advantage of:
- reduced IT costs
- access to a wide range of shared resources
- speed and scale of deployment
- high levels of security and performance
- an innovative environment for new services.
Based on Eduserv's Community Cloud Infrastructure and hosted at our state of the art Swindon Data Centre, the UMF Cloud Pilot was initially available to a number of SaaS projects funded by JISC as part of the UMF programme.
Cloud services for universities
Now the wider education community can take advantage of the UMF Cloud Pilot to support academic and administrative computing needs, particularly around research. Features include:
- on-demand self-service access to a range of compute and storage services.
- flexible payment models, including pay-as-you-go.
- services available directly on the JANET network.
- high capacity file storage.
- ongoing management and support of this infrastructure and its users.
- integration of IaaS services with the UK Access Management Federation using standards-based protocols.

You may have noticed that the URL for this support area has recently changed. We've done this as part of transitioning from a project (the UMF Cloud Pilot) to a service (our Education Cloud). No need to panic - any old URLs that you have got bookmarked will continue to work - but just in case you spotted it and wondered, that's why we've made the change...

I've added a new single-VM vApp Template for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to our public catalog. It's built using the same config options as our other Ubuntu vApp templates, so the root password is auto-generated as part of guest OS customization and the same password is copied across to the 'ubuntu' account...
