OpenID: an identity System for the Open Web
David OrrellDavid Orrell, Identity Systems Architect at Eduserv
Wednesday 3 December, Track 2, Online Information Show

With the surge in popularity of services such as Facebook and MySpace, users are growing accustomed to managing their own personal online identities. The expectation of users and how they choose to work online has shifted as a result. In this changing world, can existing institutionally or enterprise-focused identities meet the changing demands of users? OpenID provides a simple, decentralised single sign-on infrastructure for the Open Web, where services are accessible to all and not confined within institutional boundaries. This presentation will outline OpenID as a technology, drawing comparisons with more traditional federated identity technologies. It will provide example use-cases, particularly from an educational perspective, into how OpenID could hold potential benefits for learners. It will conclude that OpenID can be made to complement the more traditional enterprise-focused identity technologies by providing a flexible and fluid mechanism for users to manage their identities on the Web. While OpenID is not likely to provide a solution to all the identity needs of enterprises, it does provide a bridge between the enterprise and Web 2.0 worlds.

What does Web 2.0 Actually DO for us?
Mike EllisMike Ellis, Solution Architect at Eduserv
Thursday 4 December, 14:30 - 15:00 - Theatre A, Information Management Solutions Show

Web2.0 has been around for long enough that it has become a way of life for larger, content-rich providers, and smaller, nimble start-ups. But for the many institutions that are still working in the Web 1.0 world and attempting to come to terms with the non-technical questions that Web 2.0 poses: what if it is all just hype? How do we manage authority? Can we retain brand identity when conversations are no longer mediated by our marketing department? Are there challenges that are specific to the enterprise?

Mike Ellis will look at examples of Web 2.0 from different sectors and use these to draw some conclusions about what it all actually means: how ‘prosuming’, the social web and worldwide ‘wikiblogfacebooktwitter’ mania can be examined in a wider context. The presentation will then examine some of the challenges of this environment - particularly around voice, authority and brand - and suggests ways in which implementations can be rolled out in a managed way in an enterprise environment.
