These are Institutions which are defined as being "formally" part of an existing Chest Site (University/Research site) and are listed in the Affiliate Sites List. This means that any agreements which the main site has signed up to could also be available to the Affiliate Site.
A Chest Agreement is a form of contractual arrangement between the community and the supplier of a product(s). A standard Chest (Eduserv) Agreement for Data or Software consists of:
Usually a list of the platforms a product is able to run on.
The Chest Admin Contact is the person whose details are on the Commitment To Participate Form. Typically, they are: The Chest Site Contact or Chest Data Contact or Department Head.
The Chest Code of Conduct consists of guidelines which should be observed by all users of software and/or computer readable data that have been issued or made available to them by the Institution. The Code does not constitute a Licence and, in all cases, users of Products should acquaint themselves with the provisions of the relevant Licence when they obtain a copy and before putting the same to use. The Code of Conduct is in three parts: The Code, Definition of Educational Use, Copyright Acknowledgement. All employees and students of the Institution should be issued with a copy of the Copyright Acknowledgement.
Sites may optionally nominate a Chest Data Contact, particularly if the Chest Site Contact is very busy. Also, data is handled by the Library, so a Library based Data Contact is preferred. The Data Contact has the same responsibilities and carries out the same activities as the Chest Site Contact.
The Chest Site Contact acts as a communication link between Chest and the Institution, Departments and Contacts within each Institution; the Institution and Suppliers, Service Providers, Resellers, Athens personnel and Other Institutions
Chest Site Contacts hold the key position in the relationship between Chest and the Sites. They ensure that departments are aware of their role and of all Chest education Offers open to them. Their responsibility is to disseminate the information sent to them by Chest as sole recipients, and to ensure that it reaches the right people for action.
A Site completes a Commitment to Participate Form to indicate that they are interested in participating in the Agreement. The form must be signed by the Chest Site Contact or Data Contact and returned to Chest for processing. A purchase order must also accompany the Commitment to Participate Form. Some Agreements no longer require Commitment to Participate forms, which are replaced by Product Order Forms. Purchase Orders are required regardless of whether a Commitment to Participate form is needed.
A form usually associated with a Chest Offer detailing two Technical Contacts who are permitted to seek technical support under the Offer.
A form associated with the Chest Code of Conduct which is signed by employees and students. In signing the Copyright Acknowledgement Form it is understood that the Institution reserves its right to take legal action against individuals who cause it to be involved in legal proceedings as a result of violation of its licensing agreements.
Data Agreements cover a wide range of bibliographic data and include abstracts and some full text journals and these are referred to as "Data". They are distributed via CD-ROM or more commonly via an on-line Service Provider, and access management is often provided via Athens to authenticate end user access.
Lists the documentation which can be purchased under the Agreement.
A licence which offers trial copies of software or data for demonstration/evaluation purposes only, without charge. The form is broadly the same as the current site licence. It safeguards the supplier's rights and also provides safeguards for the user.
International Association of Technological University Libraries
A system whereby Higher Education Institutions and Research Councils in the UK that are directly funded by the funding bodies are "banded" according to staff and students numbers, funding etc. Institutions may be classed as Large, Medium, Small, Very Small, or Research Councils. Prices for certain Chest Agreements are based on this criteria.
A JISC funded Mailing List Service for facilitating discussion, collaboration and communication within the UK Academic Community and beyond on a wide range of subjects. Most Chest Agreements have JISCmail lists associated with them which are used by individuals for discussions pertaining to that Agreement.
A document defining the permissions of use of a particular Data under a Data Agreement.
An announcement about a new Agreement or Offer with a brief overview.
An Offer applies when a product is made available at a particularly attractive price. Offers have a lot more prominence than directory entries: they are individually listed with full information on our web site. Offers are announced to the entire community. Software items in this category have not necessarily been formally evaluated, but tend to be products which are already firmly established in the market place. An Offer may be valid for a short-term period only, or made into a special arrangement which is available over a period of several months.
For each Chest Agreement / Offer an Overview is produced and sent by electronic mail to all Sites eligible to participate in the Agreement and/or displayed on the Chest Web pages. The Overview summarises the main points agreed with the supplier of the product and sets out the terms and conditions of the offer to enable Sites to decide whether they wish to participate.
A form usually associated with a Chest Offer showing the products required, the chosen reseller and details of the authorised individual at the Institution ordering the product. The Product Order Form usually accompanies the Institutions formal Purchase Order.
The Licence which is signed by the Licensor and Licensee. On receipt of the Commitment to Participate Form, Chest sends to the Chest Site Contact three copies of the Licence Conditions (Schedule 4) together with supporting paperwork. Completion and signing of the Schedule 4 is the formal acceptance of the Agreement Licence conditions and binds the Institution to the terms and conditions accordingly. Use of Copyright Software or Data included in the formal Agreement paperwork is a that should be signed by all individuals having access to or use of the licensed material.
Most Site Licence Agreements include provision for at least one Technical Contact and a Deputy. The Technical Contact (or Deputy in their absence) is the only person permitted to seek technical support under an Agreement. The Technical Contact's responsibilities are applicable to both software and data Agreements.
