News from Chest Helpdesk

Like any other organisation, Eduserv occasionally needs to make internal changes in order to continually improve the service provided to UK universities and colleges.

Eduserv is a not-for-profit organisation providing sustainable, shared services such as Chest and OpenAthens for universities and colleges. A new Helpdesk function has been established to cover non-technical enquiries on all of our services.  The Chest Helpdesk no longer exists as a discrete entity and its functions have been assumed by the “Eduserv Help” team.

What does this mean for you?

Eduserv Help will be the visible front end for all the same enquiries you would have sent to the Chest Helpdesk. You’ll get the same answers to the same questions and the email address will continue to work. The only differences you should notice are that replies will come from the help@eduserv.org.uk address and that a ticket number in {brackets} has been added to the subject line. The ticket number, amongst other things, allows any reply to be automatically associated with the original query. Eduserv Help will provide you with a single point of contact for all of your non-technical enquiries regardless of the service it relates to.

If you have any questions about these changes, please drop a line to help@eduserv.org.uk.

NewsBank pricing for 2009 to 2011

For licensing information and details on how to subscribe on this Chest Agreement please read the NewsBank Overview.

Invitation to participate in an Engineering Focus Group

Eduserv Chest would like to invite you to join its Engineering Focus Group consisting of academic librarians with expertise in engineering resources.

The purpose of the group will be to:

  • provide Eduserv Chest with guidance about the key issues relating to licensing terms and conditions of a variety of engineering electronic resources.  This information will be used by Chest to inform their negotiations for new agreements and the renewal of existing agreements.
  • provide a “sounding board” for reviewing proposals from publishers and suppliers.
  • help Chest to identify important resources and to flag new publishers in the area of engineering.
  • take a collective approach to leverage larger suppliers to negotiate with Chest with the whole academic sector in mind.

Whilst the group will look specifically at engineering resources, it will take a pragmatic approach and discuss other resources where there may be some overlap with other subjects.

It is anticipated that the group will meet twice annually in a convenient location with the first meeting being autumn 2008. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

If you would like to contribute and help shape Eduserv Chest Agreements for engineering resources or for more information please contact Nicola Garwood at nicola.garwood@eduserv.org.uk

Nielsen road shows

Nielsen Book is planning a series of free road shows later in the year to bring together librarians, booksellers and publishers at a local level. Each group will have a tailored programme of talks, while providing the opportunity to network and exchange views over canapés and drinks. Nielsen will also provide demonstrations and training on any of their services as required.  Talks are currently planned for Oxford, Aberystwyth and Dublin.

These free road shows may prove a good opportunity to learn more about how to get the most from Nielsen BookData Online, including its personalisation features and how staff and students may benefit from the resource.

To register your interest, include your name and contact details in the body of your message and send an email to marketing.book@nielsen.com with “Free Bookseller Road Show:” and the place of interest (Oxford, Aberystwyth or Dublin).

Our Agreement with Nielsen covers BookData Online UK & Ireland and BookData Online International.  These databases provide comprehensive, timely, accurate title records for search and discovery enabling users to verify titles, prices and availability, as well as receiving email notifications of the latest new title information.  For more details of the Eduserv Chest Agreement please visit the Nielsen BookData Agreement.
