Team members answer questions about themselves and their role at Eduserv

James Spencer
Service Support Manager

What is your role at Eduserv?

I am responsible for the Service Support Group (SSG), a 20-strong team which includes the Service Desk, Technical Delivery and Application Support. SSG is responsible for managing all support volume for the organisation both internally and for all our external customers. My role is to manage the teams and to make sure we are providing our customers with the highest quality of service, which includes assessing the ways we operate and making improvements where I feel we need to move forward. The teams within the SSG offer a high quality support service across an abundance of technical skills, from application support and development using .NET to virtualised infrastructure support.

How long have you worked here?

I moved here 18 months ago. I’ve been in IT for 12 years, originally as a developer, then as a senior developer and then five years ago I moved into management.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

It’s an extremely good organisation to work for. Everything I was promised when I first joined has happened – the training, the environment, the opportunities for career progression.

Eduserv very much recognises that its most important assets are its employees. While a lot of companies will say this, this organisation means it. They value their employees and listen to you – whatever level you are. There is a sense of trust here – you are allowed to get on and do your job.

 Describe the culture at Eduserv

The organisation has a very unique make-up. I’ve worked for purely commercial companies where, at the end of the day, all they were interested in was the bottom line. Here, we do have to be commercial, but it is not always the most important thing – it’s making sure we provide a quality service and have the right things in place.

How has working for Eduserv helped your career development?

There is a real emphasis on personal and career development here. Provided it fits in with the needs of the company, there is always the opportunity for people to move their career in the direction they want.

All the training I and my team do is industry standard, such as Microsoft qualifications, ITIL and Prince2 – these are best practice benchmarks and having those skills on your CV give you a high standard of credibility.
