Inspec

Inspec contains over 11 million bibliographic abstracts and indexing (A & I) in the fields of science and technology.  The Inspec Archive covers the period from 1898 – 1968 and provides fully searchable electronic access to over 70 years of international scientific and technical literature.

Simplified pricing has been introduced for the Inspec Archive.  Sites can purchase Inspec Archive without worrying about how long, or even if, they subscribe to Inspec (current file) through the Chest Agreement.  Please see the pricing sections of the website for details and to sign up.  For information on the Inspec Archive, please download the leaflet (PDF, 2.4 Mb)  and fact sheet (JPG, 214 Kb) .

Inspec® 1969 – present day

Content
Around 5000 scientific and technical journals and some 2500 conference proceedings, as well as numerous books, reports and dissertations are scanned each year by Inspec staff for relevant articles to abstract and index for inclusion in the Database. Of the 5000 journals, around 1600 are indexed cover-to-cover.

Key features

  • Global coverage - 11 million records containing abstracts and subject indexing covering scientific and engineering literature from quality global literature from 1969.
  • Comprehensive coverage - in the fields of electronics, computer science, physics, electrical, control, production and mechanical engineering – Over 11 million records.
  • Specialised subject indexing by experts that retrieves accurate and extensive results.
  • Archive file from 1898-1968
  • Updated weekly to provide timely information
  • Web links to the original article (where available) - currently 70 per cent of journal articles
  • Flexible pricing options and range of products that satisfies all budgets

The Inspec® Archive 1898 - 1968

Key Features

  • Fully searchable electronic access to over 70 year of international scientific and technical literature in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, computing and control engineering
  • 837,000 abstracts
  • Gives easier access to a wealth of knowledge gathered since 1898.
  • Elimination of the need to keep ageing print volumes: saves on storage costs, your time and frees-up library shelving.
  • High-quality English language records with value added indexing plus modern indexing: allows for simple searches across consistently indexed records.
  • Complements the main Inspec database: extend coverage from 1898 to date
  • Access through many Service Providers

Flexible pricing options

As library space becomes a premium, print copies of early abstract journals are becoming scarce. To overcome this, Inspec digitised the entire collection of Science Abstracts Journals (back to volume one) dating from 1898 to 1968. The Science Abstracts Journals were the precursor to the Inspec database. The subject coverage is:

  • All aspects of physics (originally published as Physics Abstracts)
  • Electrical and electronic engineering (introduced as a separate journal in 1903, and originally published as Electrical and Electronic Abstracts)
  • Computing and control engineering (introduced as a separate journal in 1966, and published initially as Control Abstracts, later renamed to Computer and Control Abstracts)

The backfile contains

  • 837,000 abstracts
  • The original value-added indexing and classifications
  • Enhancements in the form of the nearest equivalent current Inspec Thesaurus Terms and Inspec Classification Codes
  • Conference proceedings, books, journals, reports and dissertations
