OpenAthens enables commercial organisations to:

• manage identities of employees, partner organisations and individuals
• control access of employees and other individuals - from partner organisations or the public - to internal applications, electronic resources and other services
• provide single sign-on to electronic internal and external resources from a user's network login onwards
• control business unit costs including subscriptions.

OpenAthens can also be used to gather statistical data that enables cross-charging between business units for the use of shared electronic resources.
